Primary Responsibilities

  • Track Maintenance: Regular inspection, cleaning, tightening of bolts, and ensuring the smooth alignment of tracks.
  • Track Repair & Replacement: Replace worn-out rails, sleepers, and ballast as directed by the section engineer.
  • Emergency Response: Attend breakdowns, derailments, or natural obstructions on railway lines.
  • Safety Checks: Ensure no loose fittings, gaps, or damages before and after train passages.
  • Assisting Engineers: Support permanent way inspectors and supervisors in track-leveling and machine-assisted maintenance.
  • Documentation: Record maintenance work and report irregularities in daily logs.

Work Environment

  • Work is generally outdoor and field-based, often under varying weather conditions.
  • Trackmen may need to work in rural, forested, or remote areas depending on the railway section.
  • Duties involve standing, walking, lifting, and bending for extended periods.
  • Night shifts, emergency calls, and overtime duty may be required for urgent maintenance.

Salary & Benefits

Monthly Salary: ₹22,000 – ₹37,000 (based on experience, region, and allowances)

Application Process

  1. Visit the Official RRB Portal: Go to the Indian Railways Recruitment Board website.
  2. New Registration: Fill in your basic details such as name, date of birth, and mobile number.

Selection Process

Selection will be based on the following stages:

  1. Written Examination:
    Objective test covering General Knowledge, Mathematics, Reasoning, and Railway Safety Awareness.
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET):
    • Running (1000m within specified time)
    • Lifting and carrying weight (35–40 kg for a short distance)
    • Endurance activities to assess strength and stamina.
  3. Document Verification:
    Verification of educational certificates, ID proofs, and category documents.
  4. Medical Examination:
    Candidates must meet A-3 or B-1 medical standards, depending on the railway zone.

Training & Career Growth

  • Selected candidates undergo initial training at zonal railway training centers.
  • Training includes track inspection techniques, safety drills, and equipment handling.
  • After completion, candidates are posted as Track Maintainers Grade-IV.
  • With experience and departmental exams, promotions are available to:
    • Track Maintainer Grade-III / II / I
    • Senior Section Engineer (Permanent Way)
    • Inspector of Works (Track)

Work Schedule

  • Typical shifts are 8 hours, but emergency duties may require longer hours.
  • Rotational shifts including night, early morning, and weekend duties.
  • Paid overtime is applicable during high workload or emergency conditions.
